Coping Skills for Men: Building Resilience Through Healthy Habits
Men face stress like everyone else, but societal pressure often makes it harder to talk about emotions or ask for help. That doesn’t mean men have to bottle things up—developing healthy coping skills is a powerful way to build resilience and support mental well-being. Restoration & Wellness therapist, Nick Wall, LPC, who specializes in men’s health and men’s issues, weighs in on effective strategies that work.
1. Move Your Body

Exercise isn’t just good for your physique—it’s a natural mood booster. Whether it’s lifting, running, hiking, or yoga, physical activity helps release stress, improve mood, and build confidence. Plus, it strengthens the mind-body connection and keeps you grounded in the present moment.
“Exercise is proven to relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression. It is no surprise our bodies and our minds are at ease when we engage with physical outlets,” Nicholas Wall, LPC.
2. Practice Mindfulness and Breathwork

Mindfulness, meditation, and controlled breathing can calm the nervous system and reduce impulsive reactions. Even a few minutes a day can help bring clarity, manage anxiety, and improve emotional awareness. It might feel unfamiliar at first, but the mental payoff is real.
“These are grounding exercises that allow us to balance our thoughts and be fully present. Anxiety can detect threats and leave our minds in the future. Depression can ruminate on mistakes or regrets and leave us with one foot in the past. Centering ourselves with these sorts of activities can help us feel more balanced day to day,” Nick Wall, LPC.
3. Express Yourself

You don’t have to be a writer or artist to benefit from expression. Journaling lets you get thoughts out of your head and onto paper, while creative outlets like music or art offer non-verbal ways to process feelings. Talk therapy is also a powerful tool—offering a safe space to unpack emotions and gain perspective.
“You are more likely to achieve a goal if you are writing it down. You can also be surprised with what you are really thinking when you express it outside of your internal dialogue. These are outlets- places to apply your energy,” Nicholas Wall, LPC.
4. Build a Toolkit That Works for You
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. What matters is finding what works and sticking with it. The more tools you have—movement, mindfulness, creativity, connection—the better prepared you’ll be to handle life’s challenges.
