We live in a time where heartbreaking headlines and distressing content are just a scroll away. Staying informed matters – but so does protecting your mental health.

As therapists, we often talk with clients who feel overwhelmed, helpless, or emotionally drained by the constant flow of difficult world news. Here are some of the most effective strategies we share when world news feels too heavy to carry:

1. Limit How Often You Check the News

You don’t need to consume every update to stay informed. Choose one or two trusted sources and set boundaries around how often you check them—especially before bed.

2. Name What You’re Feeling

Sadness, grief, rage, numbness – whatever shows up, it’s valid. Naming your emotions helps reduce overwhelm and gives you a starting point to process them.

3. Focus on What’s Within Your Control

You may not be able to change the world today, but you can take meaningful steps in your community: donate, volunteer, advocate, or simply connect with others.

4. Balance What You Consume With What Restores You

For every heavy article, allow yourself something nourishing: a walk, a light podcast, a funny show. Self-regulation isn’t avoidance—it’s resilience.

5. Curate Your Feed

Social media algorithms thrive on outrage. Unfollow accounts that leave you drained, and follow those that offer grounding, hope, or helpful tools.

6. Talk About It

You don’t have to hold all this alone. Whether it’s a friend, support group, or therapist—sharing your thoughts can help you feel seen and less isolated.

“I’m So Triggered!”

We’ve all heard it—maybe in a meme, a sarcastic tweet, or casual conversation. But what does being “triggered” actually mean?

The term has been widely adopted in popular culture and online spaces, often stripped of its psychological roots and tossed around in ways that downplay its seriousness. In this blog, we’ll unpack what “triggered” really means, explore how it’s often misused, and look at how social media plays a role in diluting its true purpose.

What Does “Triggered” Actually Mean?

People often say they’re “triggered” when they’re annoyed or upset. But in mental health, the word means something very different.

Being triggered is a trauma response. It happens when something reminds someone of a painful or scary event from their past. This reminder—called a trigger—can cause strong emotional or physical reactions. Triggers may lead to panic attacks, flashbacks, or intense fear. Triggers aren’t always obvious. They can be sounds, smells, words, or even certain places. And the response isn’t a choice—it can feel sudden, overwhelming and out of control.

Examples of common triggers might include:

A loud noise that reminds a veteran of combat

A certain smell associated with abuse

A scene in a movie that resembles a traumatic event

These responses are not just discomfort or annoyance—they can lead to panic attacks, dissociation, flashbacks, or other intense emotional responses. For individuals with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), C-PTSD, or other trauma-related disorders, triggers can disrupt daily functioning and require coping tools to manage.

How People Misuse the Word

You’ve probably heard someone say:

“That traffic was triggering.”

“I’m triggered by Mondays.”

“Triggered much?” (usually sarcastically)

In these cases, people aren’t describing a trauma response. They’re talking about feeling annoyed, uncomfortable, or offended. Restoration & Wellness Practice Director Griszel Long, LCSW, has noticed that the term “has become popularized and is sometimes misused in social contexts, often to describe minor annoyances rather than serious emotional reactions that affect functioning.”

This kind of misuse waters down the real meaning of the word. It makes trauma seem like a joke. It can also make people who struggle with PTSD or anxiety feel dismissed or mocked. Worse, it can turn a legitimate mental health term into a punchline or insult—contributing to stigma instead of empathy.

How Social Media Makes It Worse

Social media platforms have played a huge role in shifting the meaning of “triggered.” Often used in memes or “call-out” culture, it’s become shorthand for overreaction, weakness, or hypersensitivity. It’s often used to mock people who express emotion, vulnerability, or discomfort, especially around sensitive topics like identity, social injustice, or mental health topics.

This creates three big problems:

It makes trauma seem dramatic or fake.

It shames people for having emotions.

It spreads confusion about real mental health issues. It blurs the line between clinical symptoms and everyday frustrations, making it harder for people to know when to seek help—or feel safe doing so.

When trauma becomes a punchline, people may stop sharing what they’re going through. They may feel embarrassed to ask for help.

Why Language Matters

Words carry weight. Words shape how we view mental health. When we casually use clinical terms like “triggered,” “traumatized,” or “OCD” the wrong way, we make it harder for people to speak up about what they’re feeling.

We also risk creating a culture that laughs at vulnerability instead of supporting it. For those working through trauma, hearing their experiences used as slang or as an insult can feel isolating and invalidating. Restoration and Wellness Practice Director, Griszel Long, LCSW, agrees. She believes that “understanding the term in its original context can foster more respectful discussions about mental health.”Using “triggered” the right way helps validate people’s experiences. It opens the door for deeper conversations and real healing. If we want to build a more compassionate and mentally healthy society, we need to choose our words carefully—and make room for people to express pain without ridicule.

What You Can Say Instead

If you feel overwhelmed, anxious, or upset—but not triggered by trauma—you can say:

“This is making me anxious.”

“That topic is hard for me.”

“I need some space to think.”

“I’m uncomfortable with that topic.”

“I need to take a break—that was overwhelming.”

These phrases name the emotion without misusing mental health language. And if someone else says they’re triggered, try responding with compassion rather than skepticism or sarcasm.

Final Thoughts

The word triggered deserves care and respect. It’s not just slang or social media talk—it’s a real term that describes real emotional pain. Reclaiming its meaning doesn’t mean policing language—but it does mean being intentional. Using the word accurately helps create space for healing, reduces stigma, and promotes empathy.

Let’s be more mindful about how we use it. And let’s create space for people to be honest about what they’re going through.

Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage our own emotions—and the emotions of others. It plays a huge role in personal well-being, strong relationships, and overall life satisfaction.

But for many men, developing emotional intelligence isn’t easy. Society often teaches boys from a young age that “real men” are strong, stoic, and self-reliant. Vulnerability is seen as weakness. Emotions are to be controlled—or avoided.

As a result, many men struggle to connect with their emotions or express them in healthy ways. But emotional intelligence isn’t fixed—it’s a skill that can be learned, practiced, and strengthened over time. With the right guidance and practice, men can develop the skills needed to identify and communicate their emotions, process mixed feelings, and build empathy for the experiences of others. In this blog, Restoration & Wellness therapists Nicholas Wall, LPC and Danielle Roser, LPC, explore how emotional intelligence can be nurtured in men and why it’s vital for emotional well-being and healthy relationships.

Here’s how we can help men begin that journey.

1. Recognizing Emotions: Beyond Anger and Frustration

The first step in developing emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and recognize one’s own emotions. Many men, particularly those who have been raised with the belief that expressing emotions is a sign of weakness, struggle to name what they are feeling. Anger, frustration, and irritation may be recognized more easily, but subtler emotions like sadness, fear, joy, or shame can be harder to pinpoint. Danielle Roser, LPC, says, “Men often deny themselves a full range of emotions based on society’s expectations that they should be “strong.” The reality is that men, like all people, can be confused and scared and still be strong and capable, but this is not a typical image that we have for men.” Emotional intelligence starts with developing emotional awareness: learning to identify, name, and sit with emotions as they arise.

Strategies that help:

Mindfulness: Paying attention to your body and thoughts in the moment. Paying attention to the present moment and observing your thoughts, feelings, body, and physical sensations. Mindfulness helps you become more in tune with your internal experiences, making it easier to identify emotions as they arise.

Journaling: Reflect on your day and write about how you felt in different situations. Over time, this practice can help you recognize patterns in their emotional responses and build a vocabulary to describe a wider range of feelings. Writing about your emotional experiences each day can help uncover patterns and deeper feelings.

Building a vocabulary: By expanding emotional vocabulary, you can learn to identify the subtleties of your emotional states, which is essential for healthy emotional processing. For example, instead of simply labeling everything as “anger,” you can start recognizing whether you are feeling frustrated, hurt, overwhelmed, or disrespected. This distinction is important for understanding how to address and regulate different emotions. Learning new emotional terms can help articulate complex inner states.

When men learn to name more than just “anger” or “stress,” they gain better control over their emotional responses—and can begin to understand what’s really going on beneath the surface. This takes time, and Danielle says that it’s best to practice with people you feel most comfortable with. Danielle adds, “Men can be more comfortable in displaying a range of emotions when they are supported in their closest relationships”

2. Expressing Emotions in Healthy Ways

Even when men know what they’re feeling, expressing those emotions is often a challenge. Society often encourages men to suppress or bottle up their feelings, leaving many unsure how to communicate them in a healthy way. This can lead to misunderstandings, emotional disconnection, and even relationship issues.

A few practical tools:

Use “I” statements (e.g., “I feel overwhelmed when…”) instead of placing blame. For example, instead of saying, “You always ignore me,” you could say, “I feel hurt when I don’t feel heard.” This approach focuses on the speaker’s emotional experience rather than blaming or criticizing the other person.

Acknowledge mixed emotions (e.g., feeling excited and scared about a new job). Mixed emotions, like feeling both happy and nervous about a life change, can be difficult to express, especially for someone who is not accustomed to articulating complex emotions. However, acknowledging and communicating these conflicting feelings is an important part of emotional intelligence.

Share feelings with trusted people in safe environments—vulnerability thrives in connection, not isolation. Nicholas Wall, LPC, adds, “Talking about our feelings in general requires vulnerability and the grace provided for others to allow open dialogue.” Teaching men how to express their emotions starts with creating a safe space where they feel comfortable sharing their feelings without judgment. Open, honest communication is key.

By practicing open communication and giving themselves permission to experience and express a range of emotions, men can learn to build healthier, more authentic connections with others. It’s essential to understand that there is no “wrong” way to feel—emotions are natural, and everyone experiences them in unique ways. Learning to express emotions honestly reduces stress, improves communication, and strengthens relationships—whether romantic, familial, or professional.

3. Practicing Empathy: Understanding Others

Empathy is the ability to understand and share someone else’s emotional experience. For many men, developing empathy is a crucial component of emotional intelligence, yet it’s an area that often gets overlooked. Many men are taught to focus on their own feelings, sometimes to the exclusion of others. However, building empathy is a vital skill for emotional well-being, communication, and relationships, but men aren’t always taught how to develop it.

How to build empathy:

Active listening: Give your full attention (no interruptions), reflect back what you hear, and validate the other person’s feelings. For example, if a friend shares that they’re feeling anxious about a big presentation, an empathetic response might be, “I hear you’re feeling nervous about this presentation, that sounds really stressful.” This response acknowledges the other person’s experience without judgment or immediate solutions.

Ask perspective-taking questions: Put yourself in someone else’s shoes. Reflecting on how someone else might feel in a given situation can help foster understanding. For example, asking questions like, “How would I feel if I were in their position?” or “What might this person need right now?” helps men move beyond their own perspective and consider the emotional experience of others.

Focus on connection over fixing—people often need to be heard more than helped. Empathy is especially important in close relationships. It enables you to support your partners, friends, and family members more effectively.

“Perspective taking is the foundation of building empathy. This can be the first logical step in understanding how others may be feeling,” Nicholas Wall, LPC, emphasizes. Empathy creates emotional closeness and builds trust, allowing deeper, more fulfilling connections with others. By understanding the emotions of others, men can respond with compassion, kindness, and sensitivity, which strengthens relationships and promotes emotional closeness.

Emotional intelligence offers numerous benefits to men in both their personal and professional lives. Emotional intelligence helps men become better partners, parents, leaders, and friends. It supports mental health, reduces anxiety, and builds resilience. And it allows men to step outside rigid roles and express their full humanity. “A strong leader requires a level of emotional intelligence to build others up and understand how others may react to certain situations” Nick shares.

Developing emotional intelligence enables men to challenge harmful stereotypes about masculinity—the idea that men must be stoic, self-contained, or emotionally numb to be strong. True strength lies in vulnerability, self-awareness, and the courage to connect. By embracing emotional intelligence, men can create a more balanced and authentic sense of self. They can break free from the confines of rigid gender roles and allow themselves to be fully human—expressing vulnerability, building deep connections, and cultivating a sense of emotional fulfillment.

A New Model of Masculinity

To support men in building emotional intelligence, we must create space—for honest conversations, emotional learning, and support systems that encourage vulnerability. Whether it’s through therapy, friendships, or role models, helping men grow emotionally benefits everyone. Nicholas Wall, LPC, reminds us that “just like any form of intelligence, it takes time and effort to improve.”

When men learn to feel, express, and empathize, they don’t just become more emotionally healthy—they help redefine what it means to be a man. As we continue to shift cultural norms around masculinity, emotional intelligence will be a key skill for men to develop in order to experience greater emotional well-being and contribute to stronger, more compassionate relationships.

Masculinity has long been shaped by societal expectations that dictate how men should behave, feel, and express themselves. From an early age, men are often taught to adhere to certain characteristics and behaviors that are seen as “manly” or “masculine.” These traits—such as strength, confidence, emotional stoicism, and aggression—are deeply ingrained in our cultural fabric. But what happens when men are unable to meet these expectations, or when they feel vulnerable or out of sync with these ideals? Unfortunately, it can lead to feelings of shame, guilt, and even mental health struggles that are often misunderstood or ignored. Restoration & Wellness therapists, Nicholas Wall and Danielle Roser share their insights on the pressures men face in society today, and how they can challenge the pressure to conform.

The Pressure to Project Strength and Confidence

In many cultures, one of the most prominent expectations placed on men is the need to constantly project strength and confidence. Men are encouraged to be assertive, competitive, and never show signs of weakness. The notion of “toughing it out” is seen as a sign of true masculinity, and any deviation from this standard is often met with judgment or ridicule.

For example, when men experience personal struggles, whether they are financial, relational, or emotional, they are often expected to face these challenges without showing vulnerability. They are conditioned to believe that asking for help is a sign of weakness, and that a “real man” must handle problems on his own. Nicholas Wall, LPC, who specializes in Men’s Issues, says that experiencing these struggles alone can lead to burn out. “Being strong and confident are great attributes, yet the need to portray these things constantly can lead to burn out, overcompensation, and/or anti-social behaviors. This pressure can lead to isolation and an unwillingness to seek help when struggling.” The idea that men must be the strong, silent type can create an overwhelming pressure to constantly keep up appearances, regardless of internal struggles.

This culture of strength and stoicism leaves little room for men to explore their emotions, let alone express them in a healthy way. As a result, emotional and psychological distress can be internalized, leading to a greater risk of mental health issues.

Avoiding Intimacy and Vulnerability

Another societal expectation placed on men is the need to avoid vulnerability and emotional intimacy. Men are often told, either explicitly or implicitly, that expressing their feelings or opening up about personal matters is “unmanly” or “weak.” This pressure to bottle up emotions can create a sense of emotional isolation, where men feel that they have nowhere to turn for support. Nicholas Wall, LPC, shares that “intimacy issues are common in men and can be the root of relationship troubles. Being vulnerable is intimidating and uncomfortable, particularly when we feel our vulnerabilities will be exploited.”

The reluctance to be vulnerable isn’t limited to intimate relationships; it extends to friendships and family dynamics as well. Men may avoid discussing their struggles or fears with loved ones, fearing that it could jeopardize their sense of masculinity. The idea that vulnerability is a sign of weakness runs deep, and many men internalize this belief, leading them to hide their true selves behind a mask of stoicism. Nick Wall says that not only is it important to identify if this is an area in need of growth, but it is also helpful to have trusted people in our lives so that we can let our guard down.

Anger as the Primary Expression of Emotion

“Mad” is just “Sad’s” bodyguard.

Traditionally, men have been taught that anger is the most acceptable way to express emotions. In many cultures, expressing sadness, fear, or disappointment is seen as a sign of weakness, while anger is often portrayed as a masculine response. This can lead to the unhealthy belief that anger is not only the best way to process emotions, but sometimes the only acceptable one.

“Channelling aggression, anxiety, and energy into healthy outlets is a very important lesson in a young man’s development. Often anger is fueled by a host of mixed emotions- despair, frustration, feeling insulted, feeling unheard, etc. This typical expression can lead to risky behaviors and situations that can change the course of someone’s life.” – Nick Wall, LPC

The societal pressure to express anger instead of sadness or vulnerability can have significant consequences on men’s mental health. Instead of seeking help or finding ways to cope with their feelings in healthier ways, men may turn to aggression, substance abuse, or risk-taking behaviors as outlets. These externalized behaviors are more visible and often socially tolerated, making it harder to recognize the underlying mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, or trauma.

The Impact of Failing to Meet “Manly” Expectations

When men fail to meet these societal expectations of masculinity, it can have damaging effects on their mental and emotional well-being. The absence of “manly” traits like confidence, emotional control, and strength can lead to feelings of shame, guilt, and low self-esteem. Men may internalize the belief that they are somehow inferior or inadequate, further perpetuating negative self-images. Danielle Roser, LPC, adds, “One of the things that seems to put unfair pressure on men is the idea that they are only as valuable as their career and income. If they do not exhibit a desire for continued advancement, higher positions, powerful titles and leadership, they can feel invalidated by the people around them and society at large. As a result, men who value relationships and family above their career are seen as unsuccessful and lacking ambition.”

For men who don’t fit into these narrow molds, the pressure to conform can be overwhelming. The anxiety and confusion that accompany these feelings are often compounded by the fact that seeking help is viewed as a weakness. Many men are taught that they should “man up” and handle their issues independently, which makes it more difficult for them to acknowledge their mental health struggles or ask for help.

Mental Health: Externalized vs. Internalized

One of the greatest challenges posed by traditional views on masculinity is how mental health issues are expressed. Because men are often socialized to externalize their emotions, mental health struggles can manifest in physical or behavioral ways, such as aggression, substance abuse, or risk-taking behavior. Nicholas Wall, LPC, agrees. He notes that “externalized behaviors can distort the presence of mental health issues. Adrenaline seeking, attention seeking, and destructive actions can be fueled by a range of things. There can be a need for validation or a desire to truly feel something intensely, even if it may come with consequences.”

Moreover, the tendency to view mental health issues as externalized behaviors can make it harder for men to identify internalized struggles, such as rumination, hopelessness, self-esteem, self-image, and racing thoughts, which are commonly associated with depression and anxiety. They may feel that their internal struggles are not valid or are too “soft” to acknowledge. As a result, the symptoms of mental health issues may go unnoticed, both by the individual and by those around them. Nick shares that since internalized mental health issues can be harder to identify, they require open, honest communication to share what’s going on inside.

The Disconnect: Traditional Masculinity and Help-Seeking Behaviors

Seeking help can be seen as admitting defeat in an abstract sense. If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with others. The disconnect lies in which is more valuable. Self-improvement, overall well-being, and emotional balance can be supported with the help of others. – Nicholas Wall, LPC

The traditional “manly” traits—strength, confidence, anger, and independence—can act as barriers to men seeking mental health support. Many men internalize the belief that needing help contradicts their masculine identity. This can prevent them from recognizing underlying mental health issues or seeking treatment, even when they are struggling.

In reality, these traditional traits are limiting and unhealthy. Mental health is a vital aspect of well-being that affects everyone, regardless of gender. Men, just like women, deserve the opportunity to express vulnerability, seek emotional support, and receive the help they need when facing mental health challenges.

Breaking the Mold: A New Path Forward

To challenge these traditional views of masculinity, it is important to create a culture that values emotional expression, vulnerability, and self-care for men. Encouraging men to be open about their struggles, whether with friends, family, or professionals, can help break down the barriers that prevent them from seeking help. Normalizing mental health conversations and reframing masculinity to include emotional awareness, empathy, and self-compassion can go a long way in reducing the stigma around men’s mental health.

Men should be empowered to express a wide range of emotions, seek help when needed, and embrace vulnerability without fear of judgment. Only by breaking free from restrictive gender norms can men fully embrace their authentic selves and live healthier, more balanced lives.

In the end, the fight for healthier masculinity is not just about changing how men perceive themselves—it’s about changing how society perceives them. By challenging outdated views and supporting men in embracing their full humanity, we can create a world where mental health struggles are acknowledged, understood, and treated with the care they deserve.
